By the end of the 19th century, the Franciscans from Hum, as the carriers of culture and spirituality in this part of Herzegovina, came to the idea of establishing a museum collection, following the example of the most important European cities. Since the founding of the collection, friar Anđelo has kept an inventory book called Spomenik, where visitors and volunteer donors were registered with a description of the arrived movable material until the second half of the 20th century. The fact that the archeological, natural and numismatic findings were continuously increasing thanks to common activities of numerous amateur archaeologists, whose traces have remained insufficiently noticed, inspired students / authors to design SpomenArh installation as a kind of revitalization of inventory books and amateur archeologists. Although the largest number of registrations were made by Franciscans, in 1884 the first donations of civil servants and citizens were recorded, recognizing the value of the collection and donating various random artifacts found in Herzegovina. The largest number was recorded in the period from 1884 to 1928 when 234 donations were submitted with the donor data and the contributions of the benefactors.
The notes in Spomenik are certainly one of the motives, as well as a sort of mark used by former and contemporary researchers of the past of the Ljubuški region. They are also a message from the past to nowadays society as well as to all future generations of amateur archaeologists.
"As far as ancient things are concerned, I only mention that the wealth that our homeland has in a great multitude, and shares this beautiful opportunity with us, that those sources of traditions and religion, etc., that are historically recorded, must be secured.
So, let us finally wake up from the snooze, let us show that we master that highest degree of culture, and that we can read from the secret book of nature and the will of God!
Forward, for the glory of God, the race, the honor of the people!"
- The quotation from the preface of Spomenik by friar Anđelo Nuić
